KADIKOY HISTORICAL MARKET AREA BUILDING INVENTORY PROJECT Print

For a healthy, secure and sustainable urban life, before starting any renovation or revitalization projects in historical market area , building characteristics must be examined, constructural risks must be exposed and precautions must be taken.

  

Goals of the Project
• To update the data about buildings in the historical market area for renovation and revitalization projects.
• To examine the constructural condition of the buildings and photograph the all buildings in the area .
• To question the need of geological, geotechnical and structural datum in historical market area.
• To collect the data by spatial analysis and evaluate this data.
• To evaluate the data which is collected by fast visual scan method.
• To integrate collected data into city information system used in municipality.

Current Condition of the Buildings in the Area
• There are a variety of building types in the project area .These buildings have different number of stories , constructed in different time intervals, and have different construction systems such as concrete or wooden.
• Among these buildings there are officially registered historical buildings such as Turkish baths, mosques, fountains, churches.
• Examples of the very first apartment buldings built in Kadıköy District are in the historical market area.
• A detailed risk analysis for earthquake effects has not ben made for historical market area until today.

Conclusions
• The buildings which have potential risks for earthquake must be exposed. As a result of the analysis the buildings which need further detailed examination have been determined. Number of these buildings is 368 and 58 buildings in the area need urgent intervention. Among these building 33 of them are officially registered historical buildings.
• Historical buildings in critical condition must be urgently restored and renewed.
• Property owners in the project area should be informed about the results of the research and analysis. The need to make further detailed examination must be explained and land owners must be encouraged to do this under municipality’s control.
• Further examination of public buildings and commonly used buildings such as commercial buildings must be made . Buildings those have high structural risks must be retroficated.
• Secure and economic retrofication alternatives must be developed for buildings which have different structure systems.

All datum collected from the Project Area is digitally integrated with Geographical Information Systems used in Kadıköy Municipality. GIS based thematic maps are prepared . These maps contain various queries about building spesifications .

For renovation and restoration of the historical market place, the support from World Bank Founds or EU Founds may be used.
